Fire Exit Door Regulations in the UK
Emergency fire doors come in different sizes, but they all need to meet certain regulations. As stated by The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, fire exit doors:
- Must open in the direction of escape. This means they should open outwards.
- Must not be locked. Otherwise, this might slow down a person in an emergency.
- Must not be a sliding or revolving door. Instead, it should be fitted with a panic bar that makes it easy to push and open it outwards.
- Must be indicated with a sign. This makes it easier for people to find it.
All of our fire exit doors are made and fitted with the legislation in mind, so you can rest assured they meet the regulations required by law. You can find out more about the law requirements in our recent blog about fire regulations in commercial buildings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Fire Exit Door Be Left Open?
Yes, fire exit doors can be left open but as they are external ones, leaving them open can present a security risk, so it’s advised not to do it. The doors that you can’t leave open are fire resistant doors, also known as fire doors, as their purpose is to stop a fire from spreading, so the law requires you to always keep them closed.
Can a Fire Exit Door Be Used as an Entrance?
Yes, you can use a fire exit door as an entrance. However, emergency exit doors are usually designed to be opened only from the inside, so you’ll need to install an outside access device (OAD) to be able to open it from the outside.
Can Fire Exit Doors Open Inwards?
The only occasion on which a fire exit door is allowed to open inwards is if it provides access for less than 60 people. Otherwise, all emergency exit doors are required to open outwards by law.
Can You Lock a Fire Exit Door?
For security reasons, fire exit doors can be locked to prevent people from entering from the outside, but panic bars have to be fitted on the inside to allow people to open them easily in case of an emergency.
Is a Fire Door and Fire Exit the Same?
No, fire doors, also known as fire-rated doors, are fire-resistant and are fitted inside buildings. They’re designed to stop the fire from spreading across the building. On the other hand, fire exit doors are not fire resistant; they’re fitted as the final opening to the outside of the building and their sole purpose is to allow people easy access to the outside in an emergency.
